UIRAPURU TORI  ウイラプル鳥

WORK COMMISSIONED AND PRODUCED BY LA FORÊT WASHI MEETS ART FESTIVAL 2024 - JAPAN

Uirapuru, from Tupi-guarani indigenous language, is the name of a bird which singing sounds like a flute and it’s considered to be an enchanted bird in Brazil. Tsuru is the bird, symbol of hope and peace, in Japan. During her stay as artist in residence at La Forêt, international multi-talented artist Nina Vogel has created an Opera-Fable in One Act Uirapuru Tori, in collaboration with Japanese musician Taichiro Omura, from Kochi.

A new fantastic playing costume was created from an intense artistic process and research, in which she has learned the process of the fabrication of Washi paper, followed by a deep exchange with the local community as well as the traditional Japanese music and costumes. Using a combination of Japanese fabrics, local elements and textures, she created a new universe in the costume.

Synopsis of Uirapuru Tori:

In the infinite dance of the Cosmos, for thousands of years, a small blue planet has been home to the human species, which lived in perfect harmony with the Gods. They would communicate through messages received by the enchanted bird Uirapuru, until a petty king, blinded by his own heavy golden crown, took power over the planet and forbade their connection.
Ruin and chaos were then established. In his dreams, Uirapuru receives a message from the Gods and sets off on a journey around the planet, in search of Tsuru, the Japanese enchanted bird, symbol of peace and hope.

Uirapuru meets Tsuru. West meets East through costume design, puppetry and music, where a small enchanted bird will fly to discover a whole new universe - full of sounds, contrasts, colors and other beings, so different, yet so full of similarities. Uirapuru Tori invites the audience to fly and sing with him in this fantastic journey of discoveries towards what unites us all.
